CHALK DRAWINGS
Water on slate evaporates at a slow, even rate. The wet black tones shrink and compress like a living thing until they eventually dry and lose their form altogether. In 2011, Carol Golemboski made over one hundred abstract drawings with chalk and a damp sponge on a blackboard. As the water dissipated and morphed, she photographed the spontaneous abstractions with 4” x 5” black and white film, capturing the gestural movement that she controlled and the evaporation that occurred naturally. The resulting images are studies in line, texture, tonality, and, most importantly, time.
