MAD HATTERS
Designed to be displayed in grids, the Mad Hatters are
silver gelatin prints that feature graphic patterns and unexpected elements within the repeated form of a
top hat. The representation of the hat connects literature, photography, and magic, recalling Lewis
Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, mercury that was used in both the production of hats and the
development of Daguerreotypes, and the most clichéd symbol of a magician. This antiquated style of hat,
associated historically with men, is subtly ironic, as the photographic magician in this case is actually a woman.
