PSYCHOMETRY - PHOTOGRAPHS
Psychometry is a series of manipulated and toned black and white photographs of objects found in flea
markets, auctions, and estate sales. The term Psychometry refers to the pseudo-science of "object
reading," the purported psychic ability to divine the history of objects through physical contact.
Combining photography with drawing, seamlessly incorporating photograms, and scratching the emulsion of the
negative all serve to create images where horror, history, and psychology occupy the same haunted locale.
This body of work suggests a world in which ordinary belongings transcend their material nature to evoke the
elusive presence of the past.
In 2013, Carol Golemboski published an interactive artist’s book of the Psychometry series. This dynamic ipad app
used new media to illuminate her psychologically charged photographic still life imagery. Interactive features
highlighted her unique darkroom process through demonstrations, location shots, studio tours, and video
interviews. The Psychometry app was selected as one of the twelve Outstanding Books of the Year in 2013 by the
Independent Publisher Book Awards, winning the category of Outstanding eBook Achievement.
